Transforming Maternal and Neonatal Health in Nigeria

Background

Maternal mortality and neonatal morbidity remain critical public health challenges in Nigeria, disproportionately affecting rural and underserved communities. Despite global advancements in healthcare, Nigeria accounts for one of the highest rates of maternal and infant deaths, with systemic gaps in healthcare access, education, and financial support exacerbating the crisis.

Problem Definition

Maternal Mortality: Nigeria records approximately 512 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, representing 20% of global maternal deaths (WHO, 2023). Most fatalities are preventable with timely access to skilled care, emergency services, and adequate health education.
Neonatal Morbidity: Newborns account for 32% of under-five deaths in Nigeria. Causes include preterm birth complications, birth asphyxia, and infections, often worsened by inadequate neonatal facilities and financial barriers.

Systemic Challenges: Rural communities face limited access to healthcare services, lack of maternal education, and socio-economic barriers. Policies addressing these issues remain under-implemented or underfunded.

Trends and Relevant Statistics
Rural Disparities: Women in rural areas are 50% less likely to have access to skilled birth attendants compared to their urban counterparts.
Financial Constraints: 67% of Nigerian families report being unable to afford emergency maternal or neonatal care.

Global Benchmarks: Countries with strong maternal health policies and community-based interventions have seen a 40-60% decline in mortality rates over the past decade, underscoring the potential for improvement.

Needs

Education and Empowerment: Rural mothers need targeted education on safe maternal practices and income-generating skills to support neonatal health.

Emergency Financial Assistance: Vulnerable families require financial support for neonatal care, particularly during medical emergencies.

Policy Advocacy: Enforcing stronger policies and laws to protect maternal and neonatal health is essential for long-term impact.
